The search for quality in the vineyard and winery is pushed to the highest levels with extreme attention paid to environmental sustainability, full awareness of a great tradition and a vision that looks at the future to innovate and renew. A land that has always been suited for the cultivation of grapes and the personality of a true Tuscan family come together to give body and life to a fine selection of wines, the flagship of the Sensi family dedicated to those who love excellence.
THE ESTATE
A BOUTIQUE OF EXCELLENCE IN THE LAND OF ORIGIN
In the heart of Tuscany, in the Chianti Montalbano area, the Fattoria di Calappiano covers 200 hectares of vineyards, olive groves, forests and ancient villa, represents one of the historical and architectural treasures of the Medici family.
It was commissioned by Grand Duke Francesco I in 1500 and it is one of the first examples of Tuscan farmhouse with vine growing cultivation, as proven by the fact that in the past these lands were already known for the quality of the wines they produced. Subsequently, the property was sold to Hapsburg Lorraine and, towards the end of the 1800s, it became the residence of the eccentric explorer Arnold Henry Savage Landor, anthropologist, artist and writer, as well as grandson of Walter Savage Landor, Shakespeare’s biographer.
Now, the farm is owned by the Sensi family, who turned it into a laboratory of excellence and sustainability. A place to recover the local ampelographic heritage to save and develop forgotten vines and, above all, to enhance an area with great potential, a boutique where unique wines are produced.
WINES
UNIQUE WINES, LOCAL AND INNOVATIVE
Among the wines produced in Calappiano, Collegonzi, Lungarno and Vinciano, Montalbano’s production truly stands out. Different variations of Sangiovese that interpret with elegance and refinement a unique terroir with surprising potential.
Collegonzi, the company’s cru produced from the selection of the best grapes of Calappiano, is the highest expression of this area, while Lungarno, boasting a more international style, originates from the vineyards overlooking the Arno River. The name Vinciano derives from the nearby town of Vinci, native land of genius Leonardo, which with its Reserve represents the highest expression of Chianti Montalbano. The elegant Sangiovese, Chardonnay, Chianti and Chianti Riserva Calappiano complete the wine selection of the farm.
TRADITION
THE RESPONSIBILITY OF A GREAT TRADITION
Tuscany boasts a thousand-old history of wine-making and, as shown by its innate culture for quality, already in 1716, the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo III de’ Medici selected the areas of wine production, formulating, in fact, the first wine regulations. The Sensi family is the custodian of this great tradition which has been carrying on with great responsibility since 1890, aware of the value, including the social one, that making quality wines entails.
SUSTAINABILITY
THE VALUE OF SUSTAINABILITY
The Sensi family has always been considering land an environmental and social treasure to be protected and given value for the shared good. This vision matches perfectly with a rich and generous terroir such as that of Calappiano, whose cultivation could only be carried out according to the criteria of organic farming. Today Fattoria di Calappiano is a production farm certified as EU Organic Farming, the 80 hectares of vineyards are cultivated without synthetic chemical agents and in the winery certified organic wine products are used to protect the environment and safeguard future generations.
An ethical and sustainable choice that gives Nature the respect it deserves and receives in return wines of great personality that speak of the earth and sky.
VINES
THE VINES OF TRADITION
The native vines of Chianti are cultivated in Calappiano, immersed in the typical garden-countryside of the Tuscan landscape: Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, Malvasia Toscana and Trebbiano but also Chardonnay and Vermentino. Through continuous research, varieties such as Pugnitello, Ciliegiolo and Petit Manseng were rediscovered. The experimental vineyard is dedicated to them, strongly wished by the Sensi family to create a unique wine growing experience and to carry on the tradition of the area through innovative and sustainable practices, making known a rich and expressive territory such as that of Montalbano.
Fattoria di Calappiano
AT THE DISCOVERY OF A TERROIR THROUGH ITS WINES
Enjoy the surprises of an extraordinary terroir interpreted with masterly wisdom and you will discover a Montalbano that tells its story and excites through the innovative elegance of its wines.
The lands of Leonardo da Vinci
Fattoria di Calappiano is located on the hills of Montalbano at the intersection of the provinces of Florence, Prato and Pistoia in a territory marked by a continental climate mitigated by the effects of the Mediterranean Sea. Here Leonardo Da Vinci was born and he walked on these hills. In his Leicester Code he spoke of a land rich in shells and marine fossils deposited by the passage of the Arno River: “[…] come si mostra nel taglio di Colle Gonzoli, deripato dal fiume Arno, nel quale taglio si vede nichi in fango azzurreggiante”. The soil of Calappiano, on which the 80 hectares of vineyards are located, is mainly made up of arenaceous, calcareous-marly substrates, clayey schists and sand with the presence of pebbles and marl which give the wines produced here unique character and great elegance.
